How to Use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to Land Your Dream Job

Every day, millions of people use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to socialize, stay informed and share banter—but very few use social media to land their dream job. Here’s what you’re missing out on, and how to catapult your career.

Tip: Hire a professional to write or review your résumé, cover letter, interview cheat sheet, cover letter and personal bio. Also seek an expert’s assistance to compile a digital media kit.

Strategic Benefit: You save time and can benefit from a connoisseur’s experience and skill set. Having a career coach review your professional portfolio is beneficial in the long term, because you will recoup the couple of hundred dollars paid after landing a better-paying job.

Tip: Build and maintain a strong professional network, not only on social media but also in real life.

Strategic Benefit: You have a better handle of your long-term career prospects. Even if you aren’t actively looking, you remain privy to key industry trends, skill needs and career highlights—information that will prove to be useful when you’re ready to make a career move. Additionally, you can make money through referrals if your network is filled with the kind of quality candidates that recruiters are looking for.

Tip: Watch what you post on social media. Keep your content professional and maintain civility at all times.

Strategic Benefit: You save yourself enough headaches that could arise if you lose your job or tarnish your personal reputation owing to inappropriate, offensive or illegal content. Also keep an eye on posts in which you are tagged. Employers are now terminating people for social media posts related to sex and illegal drugs, among others.

Tip: Post your professional portfolio—or, at the very least, your résumé—on a web page, such as a blog, personal website or About.me profile. Seek help from a web designer to explore everything from platform compatibility to content embedding.

Strategic Benefit:  You increase your profile in search engine result pages. Your professional portfolio is thus optimized—i.e., is compatible with various content-publication formats; ensures responsive reporting ; and comprises things like audio content, videos, graphs and charts. Remember that in a YouTube era, your professional content can live on in video format and produce additional good press for you in the long term.

Based on Bit.ly research, a candidate-content’s half-life depends on the platform on which it is shared, varying from Twitter (2.8 hours) and Facebook (3.2 hours) to email/IM clients (3.4 hours) and YouTube (7.4 hours).

Tip: Think proactively about the mobile market.

Strategic Benefit:  Depending on your industry, recruiters may be more likely to search for, and view, professional profiles through mobile devices. Making your résumé and other professional content compatible with handheld devices is advantageous because a growing number of users nowadays view content online and share it via mobile platforms.

Tip: Reformat your résumé for social-media “standards,” using a killer title and eye-catching tidbits to attract recruiters and promote the résumé’s sharing power and virality .

Strategic Benefit:  The more your résumé or professional content is shared, the more PR rewards you reap and the higher your chances of landing your dream job. Remember, you choose the content of your CV and professional portfolio, so whatever is shared can only benefit you. Draw recruiters to your portfolio with summaries, links and sharing options across platforms as diverse as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and emails.

A 2011 joint study by ShareThis, Starcom MediaVest and Rubinson Partners found that average clickthrough rates on social media were as follows: Facebook (38%), email (17%), Twitter (10%) and other link types (34%).

Tip: Explore low-cost yet efficient archiving and retrieval options.

Strategic Benefit:  By opting for a secure, reliable and cost-effective storage solution, you take control of your career along with what’s shared about you online. You also can delve into past information to update your current professional data and feed content to other platforms, including your website or blog.

Tip: Link your professional portfolio to your website or other online platforms.

Strategic Benefit:  You save time, resources and money by automatically updating data across multiple platforms. This is an important aspect of data curation.

Tip: Create and maintain a solid LinkedIn profile. Solicit endorsements and recommendations from industry luminaries, co-workers, past and current supervisors, and others who know you well. Write an attention-grabbing, Google-friendly professional headline to boost your personal brand and employment prospects.

Strategic Benefit:  You are active in occupational circles that matter, knowing the right people and increasing your chances of landing a perfect job. Remember that more employers are now filling open positions through passive recruitment .

Tip: Maintain a Twitter account, and actively follow the companies you are interested in.

Strategic Benefit:  You can gradually polish your personal brand by tweeting about topics relating to your industry or profession. Given the 140-word restriction on Twitter, make sure to include only key achievements and skills when applying to a job via the social network.
